Who's behind it
The Big Lunch began life as a wild seed here at The Eden Project. But the movement wouldn't be where it is today without the help of our family of partners and our army of supporters.

The success of The Big Lunch 2010 was made possible by the support of our family of partners.
The Big Lottery Fund are supporting and helping to build on the success of last year’s Big Lunch to involve even more people with their neighbours and local community. BIG is committed to bringing real improvements to communities and the lives of people most in need and that is why we are involved as Sir Clive Booth, Chair of BIG explains: “Bringing communities together, reducing loneliness and isolation and helping to make a difference locally is at the heart of the Big Lottery Fund’s mission. The Big Lunch last year helped neighbours across the land build a stronger sense of community. With this funding and a big serving of community spirit, we can all work towards achieving this goal.”
MasterCard is partnering with The Big Lunch for the second year running. Last year, our research into what matters to the people of Britain highlighted a real desire to reconnect with those that live closest to us: our neighbours. We believe The Big Lunch is the starting point for a return to community values and shared action. By supporting The Big Lunch, we're celebrating a simple act of community and helping to create thousands of priceless moments across the UK. As Britain’s largest producer of low-carbon electricity, EDF Energy is proud to support The Big Lunch and encourage ‘human warming’ - communal, social and environmental action – as the antidote to ‘global warming’. Together we are stronger. That’s the thinking behind Team Green Britain, a movement that aims to help Britons reduce their carbon footprint by 2012. Founded by EDF Energy and the Eden Project and now comprising over 700,000 members, Team Green Britain can help make the Big Lunch even bigger through more events and more people taking part. If you’d like to find out how you can start taking daily action towards a low carbon lifestyle today, visit teamgreenbritain.org
The Department for Communities and Local Government is working with The Big Lunch to encourage more cohesive and empowered communities through collaboration across all kinds of neighbourhoods throughout the country. There is a particular emphasis this year on working with Housing Associations and encouraging neighbours of different cultural and religious backgrounds to come together on Sunday 18th July and thereafter.
Why the Eden Project kick-started The Big Lunch
We believe the world can get better by working together, with nature, optimism and common sense. We took a former china clay pit and turned it into a landscape capable of sustaining plants from all over the world to prove the point.
Ten years on, we’re developing more wild ideas to help us face up to the challenges of the toughest century on record. Global warming needs human warming. The odd light bulb here and there won’t work. Ideas like The Big Lunch just might if we join up our efforts. Change the way we live, do the things we know we should, and we’ll leave the planet in a ripe state for our children, their children, and so on.
Eden is all about projects, we believe in experiments that live, eat, breathe and with luck, thrive. Eden is a celebration of life. People say it puts champagne in your veins, which sounds a lot more fun than chlorophyll. Although Eden kick-started The Big Lunch (and are working hard to help it grow year on year), we’re resisting the temptation to own or control the day. We want to keep it organic, create a mood, a rumour.
As we said, it’s your party.
